How to uninstall java in linux?

hi all,

  I tried to install jdk1.2.2 rc4 on RedHat Linux6.2.  Since already a
version of java is sitting in my machine that came with RHL6.2 (PCQ). How
do i uninstall the previous version ?  Further if we install a software in
linux using .tar.gz file, at a later time, how to uninstall them?
