 it worked by setting the baud_base and spd_cust parameters of setserial
 /dev/ttyS1
 
 also for serialport access to the machine the file /etc/inittab the foll.
 had to be added under getty.
     S1:23:respawn:/sbin/getty ttyS1 DT9600 vt100
