your message was posted by deivanayak balakrishnan to ilugc (chennai lug); 
here is a fix. use cu or any such program to access the modem; send it a
atx3 (or any other init string that you want to save) then do a at&w0 -
this will store this setting in the non-volatile profile 0; now, when the
modem powers on, by default, this profile will be loaded. you can check by
issuing the modem an at&v command. you should be able to live happily
everafter.
