minutes for meeting held on 15th April

Greetings everybody...

sorry for this rather delayed posting of the minutes for the last month's
meeting.

Chennai chapter of Linux India met on 15th of April for the monthly meet at
IIT computer Center. The meet started off at 4:25 pm almost an hour behind
schedule.

The agenda for the meet was a talk by Mr.Arun about PGP and GPG. Following
that, Mr.Chitoor Srikrishnan planned to give a talk on how one of his
clients machine was broken into. A demo of Suse 6.4 installation was also
scheduled.

17 people attended the meet and there were a few new comers. The meet
started off with Arun briefing about what pgp and gpg was all about. He went
on to tell why gpg was developed to overcome the patent restrictions of RSA
encryption algorithm and the compatibility issues between versions of pgp
and gpg. He also outlined the working of the pgp/gpg using the public key
cryptography and the two stage process of encryption. The discussion also
gave an idea of the encryption methodologies used in pgp/gpg and also
evolution of encryption technology.

Arun gave an idea of how to use the public key for sending messages and
files, signing keys and trust issues etc. The talk was interesting though it
did go above our head at times.

Following arun, Mr. Krishnan, gave a talk about how one of his clients
systems had been compromised. The discussion outlined the necessity for
efficient monitoring of logs and also configuring inetd daemon properly so
that unnecessary processed did not run. The discussion continued on how to
retrieve data from a system after it had been compromised.

Unfortunately, the Suse 6.4 demo had to be cancelled because a machine could
not be arranged and Mr. Manish who was to bring Suse was delayed in coming
to the meet. The meet closed at 6:30 pm for the first time in the history of
Chennai LUG.
