Characters not visible in a Terminal

Hello everybody,
        I am totally new to Linux. Please excuse me, if the
clarification I am seeking for is very silly.
        I have installed RedHat 6.1 and by default it starts in the GUI
mode - either in KDE or GNOME. How do I start in the text mode ?
        I opened the Terminal Emulation, but the characters are not
visible, I tried changing the Background/Foreground, Font and other
options in the menu.
Please help me.
