IMAP4 Setup

Hi folks,

Has anyone here managed to configure and setup
a IMAP4 mailserver for a local network when
a registered domain name isn't available ?

BTW forgive me because this is a long mail.

The scenario is as below
We have a leased line with a set of assigned static
ip addresses. We do have a domain registered in the
states with a set of 5 POP3 boxes. Currently the
mails are being downloaded from these 5 POP3 boxes
and we are using the VSNLs SMTP facilities for
sending mails. However we now require a setup wherein
the mails are sent to a server on the local network. This
server will then have to send the mails across to the
internet. The same server will need to retrieve the mails
from the POP boxes. This server is using one of the
static public IP addresses alloted to us by VSNL. We
would prefer it if the local server uses IMAP4 instead
of POP3 because of the file/folder sharing facilities and
because the mail can be kept on the server end and doesn't
have to be downloaded on to the client machines. We
are looking at the IMAP4 server given by Intrastore.

1. Any ideas as to how to do this ?
2. Do we absolutely require a registered domain name
pointing to one of the local static IP addresses so as to
setup a IMAP4 server. currently we are unable to configure
because the Intrastore server always tries to lookup the
domain name of the host machine on the internet when it
starts up and since this does not resolve (the local domain
name is a pseudo name and is not registered), it shuts down
giving errors.
3. Any other better servers - I know about the Washington
university server as well as Communigate Pro.

Any help will be appreciated.

Regards,
Prem Kurian Philip
