In the early Unix machines, the first few characters you type, ( the login
id included) will decide what capabilities your terminal has. SO we were
strictly advised not to have uppercase letters starting the login id or
even part of the id. Even now this holds. You donot have to type^[B etc.,
just type in an upper case word as login. From then on the system assumes
you are on a very early teletype - single case - terminal and will switch
to complete upper case.
