Spamming by/to list....

I have two suggestions.

1. Regarding the complaint of the vamsi5@xxxxxxxxx user(?)
-----------------------------------------------------------
If this is going to be the case, we can think of forcing to enter personal
details before subscribing to the list. Maybe the chennailug.org site can
have a link to subscribe to the list which will initiate a form (cgi/java)
and after submitting it (with non-blank entries) only, a mail is generated
to the aero server listar to enroll as a subscriber. (All direct email
subsriptions will have to be disabled). Such a script can even trap the IP
address of the client machine from which the browser
referred to the website.

Another way is to have an autoresponse mail sent to the person requesting
for subscription and ask to reply to that, just to verify/confirm. Lot of
mailing lists have this restriction to ensure that no impersonation is
done.

In case of a dispute the info from one of the above can be referred to.

Although this will need some tweaking in sendmail/listar, it is worth the
effort I feel.

It appears that, if the user in question has not subscribed himself, maybe
that somebody has misused his username/password. In such a case, the
arrangement as I said above would be useful.

2. Spamming(?) by janust@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
---------------------------------------------
Why cant we have a restriction in listar that only subscribers can post?
Majordomo allows this. We dont expect mails from all and sundry. Also, a
careful look at the headers of the 4 mails show that all of them are from
Windows machines over a dialup connection with the 1st two and the other
two from different IP addresses. That means the last two were sent after
losing connection and reconnecting....

In any case, we need to take steps to stop these nuisance(s) at the
earliest, as someone correctly pointed out, this involves 100+ users and
most of them are either busy to read all these junk mails or are using low
bandwidth connections.
