not clearly stated! lilo, of course, can overwrite you mbr whether win95
is installed or not. the problem is a bit different and is quite well
known and well documented. the kernel must reside on disk below a certain
limit; if you already have win95 installed, it most probably is on the
first partition on the hard disk and the partition is probably 1 gb or
more - and this will put you above the limit of where the kernel has to
be. so, lilo will not be able to boot your kernel and you will need to
boot linux from a floppy. to get around this, basically, you will have to
repartition your disk and create a small partition below the limit where
you put the kernel and then you can use lilo to boot your kernel and live
happily ever after; you can use fips or some such package to
non-destructively create a partition at the low end of your disk. of
course, if you want to live really happily ever after, you would start by
wiping out your windows partition and go with a linux only system :)
the newer redhat installs support a /boot partition in which the kernel(s)
are kept and only this partition needs to be at the low end of your disk.
