Hi, Here is the step by step instruction set I had posted on Linux-India some time ago (This is for installation via anonymous FTP): 1. On the machine with CD drive, call it machine A, enable anonymous FTP. 2. Make the directory /home/ftp/pub 3. Mount the RH CD there - ie, with the command mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdc /home/ftp/pub (replace hdc with your CD device). 4. Copy the file /home/ftp/pub/instimgs/bootnet.img onto a _fresh_ floppy using dd if=/home/ftp/pub/redHat/instimgs/bootnet.img of=/dev/fd0 5. Use this floppy to boot the machine without CD drive - let us say machine B. 6. It will ask for IP address and nameserver information. I had used DHCP. 7. Give the IP address of machine A and /pub as the directory when asked for the FTP server's details. 8. Continue with the installation. For NFS install, add an entry for the CD mount point /etc/exports. The line should look like: /home/ftp/pub (rw) It is better to run named on machine A (or you could use IP addresses). Note that this method of installation is recommended only over ethernet because of the tremendous load it puts on the network. In particular, don't even dream of trying it over PPP. I had checked netstat -A inet on machine A, and there were about 50 FTP connections at any given time (even though many were in FIN_WAIT1 state). Four months ago I got the same problem with my "giasmd01.vsnl.net.in" account with vsnl. After a day of tweaking and changing my settings in Navigator and fetchmail/sendmail, the error still persisted. On day two I called VSNL help desk (5360093) and told my problem. The person at the other side told me to wait and tried to access my account from his machine and the answer he gave was "Try after ten minutes, it will be working". Exactly after ten minutes, I was downloading all my pending mails as usual. The problem was with the VSNL machine. Good Luck in contacting VSNL. regards muthu P.S: I got the same error. > -ERR Unable to process From lines (envelopes), change recognition modes. --- Send e-mail to 'ilugc-request@aero.iitm.ernet.in' with 'unsubscribe' in either the subject or the body to unsubscribe from this list. This is because /usr/bin/kppp is not the one a normal user should run. You should set uid root /usr/sbin/kppp and use that one to dial out. Another method is to tweak with PAM configuration. There was a thread on this on Linux-India. A search of the archives will tell you the reasons for this. So, I'm planning to buy (used) a P-100 motherboard and I wanted to know what 32 bit soundcards (that is available in Madras) will be supported by Linux. Thanks for your help. Well, the core file is not created in the home directory always, it is created in the current working directory of the process that dumped core. When a process tries to do something that the computer is not capable of (like dividing by 0), or when it tries to do something it is not allowed to do (like accessing memory beyond what it was allocated), or even at times when the programmer/user explicitly asks it to do so, the process dumps core. The core file is a memory image of the process that dumped it, and contains information about the state of the program at that time, the order and arguments with which functions were called (called the stack trace), the environment, and various other details that can be valuable to the programmer/debugger. The following situations can generate core dumps: 1. Signals - SIGFPE, SIGSEGV, SIGTRAP, SIGIOT, SIGABRT, SIGQUIT 2. Explicit call to function abort() or raise() or kill(). 3. Keyboard interrupt via control-\ (depending on your keymap) The first two of the above list of signals correspond to the two situations mentioned above (divide by 0 and accessing invalid memory). Note that all cases finally are equivalent to signals - calls to abort() raises the SIGABRT signal, and control-\ raises the SIGQUIT signal. raise() and kill() can raise any signal, but only the ones in (1) generate core files. The programmer can avoid core dumps by handling these signals, and letting the program die gracefully. The user if he is not interested in core dump files, should put the command ulimit -c 0 in his .bash_profile (this is for bash). Smaller implies less disk space is wasted by small files.Normally a minimum of one block has to be allocated. so if you have a 1 byte file , and if the block size is 32KB, then you waste 32KB -1byte.Suppose you have a huge number of those files , you can imagine!.Smaller block size results in slower speed.I'll be speaking about filesystems in the coming ilugc meet and I'll this in greater detail. regards, George >Thanks in advance >kamesh jayachandran > _________________________________________________ Get Your Free Email At, http://www.rediffmail.com --- Send e-mail to 'ilugc-request@aero.iitm.ernet.in' with 'unsubscribe' in either the subject or the body to unsubscribe from this list. Most of the old programs, when crashed, used to leave the file for programmers to debug. It can be safely deleted and means lot less to us newbies. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Talk to your friends online with Yahoo! I also would like have the opinion of the ilugc members if we could put up information pointing to organizations giving Linux courses in chennai not as an advertisement but only as a pointer. I would also like to put up articles on often discussed topics in our Linux meetings - the sis6215c, trident 975 sort of issues. I also call upon experienced user to give writes up of setting up email clients - sendmail config etc. I call upon ravi to provide some pointers to configuring mutt - his favorite mailer :) - so that other experience its versatility and all the other features. Some articles on configuring dialing server etc would be appreciated and preferable based on one's experiences in chennai that pointing to a how-to. I also would like to know the policies of focus - and any guideline for the articles posted on the chennailug website. Another clarification - does focus allow us to put up a page with graphics with frames and extra along with the present setup. If allowed, the present setup will be reatained and a chice will be offered for those willing to go in for the graphics page. Kind attention of Mr.Aravind - i mailed you personally and waiting for a reply. and as you might have seen in a earlier mail from zameer about someone trying to mail webmaster@chennailug.org and not reaching, kindly do the needful. and who is taking care of the minutes - kindly mail them at the earliest so that they can be posted on the website. The linux-india webpage pints to chennailug's old webpage at dialognet.com and hence the gentleman from APIC thought it's been a over a year since me met. whom should i mail for making the neccessary changes and should I. Thanking you and sorry for the long mail. Deivanayak. --- Send e-mail to 'ilugc-request@aero.iitm.ernet.in' with 'unsubscribe' in either the subject or the body to unsubscribe from this list.
