Clustering+indexing+caching.

Google run on 6000 RHL machines clustered. Neat answer to microsoft who calls 
it crummy and toy...

Google caches are huge. I have yet to come across a subject, on which google 
doesn't have a cache. If web fails and google stays up, we can survive a day..
