Stevens books (there are 4 volumes in total) are incredibly informative, irrespective of whether you're a newbie or a geek.

Or check out at google.com with keywords "network programming" or "RFC". Refer to the RFCs for the latest. For Java specific work, the book "Java Network Programming" from O'Reilly is okay but little old.
