Search in http://www.research.compaq.com/ - there was a project called
"Om" (I forget the precise name) headed by Amitabh Srivastava,
which did things like this. They provided a binary editing framework, to
be used for post linking optimizations.
PS: Worked only on Digital UNIX and Amitabh went on to found a startup to
do the same for NT.
