If you are talking ab9out doing this programmatically, depends on the
language you use for programming.  'Programming perl' has a section on
network Inter Process Communication and daemons.  The Richard Stvens book
has code samples for programmning daemons using C.

Assuming that you have a program that was written to run as a deamon, look
into /etc/rc.d/init.d (under Red Hat Linux) or /etc/init.d/ (under Debian
GNU/Linux).
