problems with allocating large amounts of memory.

I'm trying out a fractal image compression algorithm which requires large
amounts of memory (more than the default heap size). I need to increase
the amount of heap space available or if necessary make malloc allocate
more memory than is available as RAM (32 Mb) by swapping or something.
If anyone out there has a solution to this, do let me know at the
earliest.
Please mail me personally because I am not a subscriber of this list.

P.S. I am using the gcc compiler.

thanks in advance.
