Hi ,
  If u need to change the display parameters, i would advice not to change
the XF86Config
file directly. Instead just run setup and in that select X Configuration.
also if you have X windows running in the applets there is one which which
allow you to position your window in a specific location. I forgot the name
but its present along with the gnome gui
