[LI] cron error mail



I am having no files in /etc/cron.hourly. I have following line in
crontab for hour.
1 * * * * root run-parts /etc/cron.hourly.
I get the following mail every hour when pc is on now past few days
only. I have changed only daily weekly and monthly lines in crontab by
direct editing. Direct editing I have done it as when entered crontab in
root didn't find any response.
Any clues for
1) why this error mail as given below comes

/bin/bash: root: command not found

2) What is the proper method to edit crontab file as root. I couldn't
make out from  the explanation in man pages.
