I think I might have got what your prob is ??
Can you gimme an output of cat /proc/pci ??
I suppose you must be having an eepro100 with
the i8559 chip  ! Is that right ?? The one with
the bigger chipset ??    And can you also post the
relevant portion of your `dmesg` when your ethernet
card gets detected ! ( just the relevant part )
Does it say anything like Invalid EEPROM Checksum ??
Just a hunch that you might be having a similar card
like mine ;-)

As you can see the card if an Intel Ether Express Pro 10/100 card.  It
works
fine with NT running on the same machine in another partition.
