Hi,
If you are a newbie and rest everyone else is reffering you to various 
HOWTO's which are driving you crazy follow this:

this site has a cool concept called LEARNTO's which are described in very 
simple steps to get your LINUX box running and covers many basic topics 
(faced by new users) like display resolution, sound cards, modem ,LAN card , 
boot disk etc etc etc etc . Once your box is running maybe you'll like to 
poke around a little and learn more!
