In your case your best friends would be
to programs, viz., "ifconfig" in the case of Red Hat and
"netconfig" in the case of slackware

you could try
ifconfig eth0 <protocol(such as inet etc> -mtu 1500 hw < hardware address of
the device>
You will also have to use the route command to specify the netmask,
broadcast address etc.

Another way of doing all this is to use the "linuxconf" tool

Now this might or might not work

You could go through the following two HOWTOs

and two man commands
man ifconfig
man route
