Yes, but when you are using the disk sets from RHL, the shell you get
from the ramdisk halts the system when you type control-D. There are
no sync/umount issued.  I have actually noticed this (after editing
/etc/passwd, without the sync, the changes were never saved).

Another situation is what you mentioned - power off the system if
necessary.  There is no time to sync and umount the filesystems. You
have to manually issue these commands.
