you can change the runlevel in /etc/inittab.
change the first uncommented line which is probably like
id:3:initdefault:
to
id:5:initdefault:
but don't forget to configure X windows before restarting, otherwise you
will be in trouble.
also uncomment any line which says runlevel 5, if it is commented.
