If you did not have your /etc/passwd shadowed, then you can always try
and run a program like crack [link anyone?] on your machine's this file
which is visible to all. If you have it shadowed then go to
http://www.rootshell.net or .com or.org and download some program which
will give you root shell upon execution, when compiled and run from any
user's account [you will have to search in your OS's scope]. Once having
the rootshell, you can view the /etc/shadow file which keeps your
passwords and run crack on that. There is little else I can tell you to
be able to help you.
