The IITB Aero. Engg. Department had started running their email server
on Linux (Slackware 1.0) almost at the same time. The people involved
were one Amitaya Isaacs who was then an undergraduate student, and
Prof. G. R. Shevare of the department. Mr. Isaacs has long left the
department, but you can get in touch with Prof. Shevare. I believe
this was in early 1992. Prof. Shevare then went on to develop XZeus,
an X/Motif based grid generation software (the bread and butter of
many Aero Engineers) on Linux. This, maybe, is the first major project
undertaken on Linux in India.
