Signal 11 is *usually* a hardware failure - and the most common one is
flakey RAM. Linux is at least able to recover from such things, while a
certain other OS has a more colourful (well, actually single colour) way
of letting you know that *something* is kaputt (though not what).

Check out http://www.qcc.sk.ca/~charlesc/software/memtester/ for a utility
that could help you detect RAM errors.
