Na re. I resolved somethings all by myself [surprised?]
1. X not starting : There was some problem with video RAM. Card etc were
fine. GUI installation    does not inform you about that. I went through
text-based options and found out exactly where    something was wrong.
So right now I CAN run X with 256 colours and a foot long/wide mouse   
pointer. I prefer not to do that. Will soon replace the card.
2. Rebooting : The left control key is faulty on the KB. So I tried
right-control, working fine    and machine reboots very very fine.
3. HALTing : The halt issued by root, still works. All the services etc
shutdown... but the LAST
   screen is still garbage. I am planning not to use HALT.
