Also, some applications use long options.  In which case --help or
--version would be the equivalent.

Another way of finding the version of an application is by looking at the
version of the package containing the application using the package
management tool (rpm or dpkg depending on distribution).

But the basic question is still a valid one.  The non uniformity (-v versus
--version versus -<some_random_letter>) of the various tools is actually
one of the most frustrating things with unix.  There is an entire chapter
on this in 'The Unix Haters Handbook'.
