Assuming that U want to re-start the gpm daemon on UR Debian box:

1) Follow what Thaths said.
2) Do read about 'update-rc.d' by 'man update-rc.d'
3) Poke around in UR /etc/init.d dir and the different
    run-level dirs in /etc.
4) Doing a '/etc/init.d/gpm restart' makes the gpm daemon re-read
the config file in /etc and UR up with the new settings.
