The search mechanism in dselect SUCKS.  The access mechanism (apt, ftp,
mountable, mounted, CD etc.) DOES NOT affect the search mechanism in any
way.  And what do you mean by directory??  When / How do the directories
get downloaded to the local machine?

Here are the problems with dselect's search method:

1. You can only search the names of the packages.  You cannot search the
short description.  This is a problem when you know what a particular
software does but not the name of the software.  Take, for example mp3. 
Searching for 'mp3' does not match the most popular MP3 pager - freeamp.

2. You cannot narrow your search to specfic categories

The newer apt-search (name?) is a better solution.
