I dont think something is wrong with the RHLinux 6.0 
1) Check your motherboard bios regarding it support for big hdd.
2) If no other os / software are installed boot with a win98 boot
floppy and try making 1 partetion for 16.8 (Actually 16gb only) and
formatting it with fat32.
3) If step 2 fails try connecting the hdd to another latest
motherboard and test again.
Note : I run redhat linux 6.0 with the same IBM hdd. (Motherboard is
ASUS P3B-F)
