[LI] pppd not using compression?

Every time I connect to the net, pppd puts these messages to the syslog.

Oct  3 16:41:51 localhost pppd[440]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/modem
Oct  3 16:41:53 localhost modprobe: can't locate module ppp-compress-21
Oct  3 16:41:53 localhost modprobe: can't locate module ppp-compress-26
Oct  3 16:41:53 localhost modprobe: can't locate module ppp-compress-24
Oct  3 16:41:53 localhost modprobe: can't locate module ppp-compress-21
Oct  3 16:41:53 localhost modprobe: can't locate module ppp-compress-26
Oct  3 16:41:53 localhost modprobe: can't locate module ppp-compress-24
Oct  3 16:41:53 localhost modprobe: can't locate module ppp-compress-21
Oct  3 16:41:53 localhost modprobe: can't locate module ppp-compress-1

I'm using a VSNL account. Do these messages mean that pppd is not using
compression? I have tried compiling the kernel with various options but
these modules are never compiled.
The maximum speed I have got is around 1.8 kbytes/second. How do I improve
the speed & what do these messages mean?
