I had this problem last week. Well 1st i had
slackware CD with me. I booted the system from
the CD-ROM  and at the boot prompt I mounted
the HDD from there. Now I directly went to
/etc. dir and replaced the passwd and shadow
file from my old back up. I dont think you get
# prompt without installation in red hat ,caldera etc.
try to get hold of a slackware CD from someone.
btw all the best breaking in ..
