[LI] Re : HALT by a user

Hi,
Ganesh asked how a normal user could halt the system.
Well, if you are using the computer from the console (no telnet, rsh
etc.), you could just type Ctrl-Alt-Del like in DOS and the system
will go through a complete shutdown (look at your /etc/inittab).
Rebooting the computer needs root access. In the above case, the
"init" program running as root did it for you. You could also do it
by making a separate login , say "shutdown" with login shell changed
to something like "/sbin/shutdown -r now" instead of the usual
"/bin/bash" or "/bin/sh". This user should obviously have root perms.
(UID=0). Due to the security risk involved, this might be a safer
solution than changing .bash_profile as Ashok suggested.
