Re: [LI] What is a postscript file?

hi sachin,

Postscript is programming language first introduced by Adobe in 1985 for
describing page layout in a device independent fashion. The language is a
derivative of the forth programming language which is a stack based
language with a Reverse Polish Notation (RPN) based syntax.

A postscript file is basically a text file containing a postscript program
that allows a postscript interpreter (either a program like ghostscript or
the post script renderer in your printer) to create the image of the page
for you to use.

For the curious the Adobe Acrobat format is basically Compressed
Postscript with some added features like hyperlinking and so on ..

for an excellent first introduction to postscript you might want to look
at :

http://www.cs.indiana.edu/docproject/programming/postscript/postscript.html

besides this you have the official Adobe documentation in the form of the
Blue Book ( PostScript Language Tutorial and Cookbook )

hope that helps
