Free speech, not free beer. Free because information should  be free.

It wasn't funded originally. It was just a hobby. Now it is being funded
with support (Linuxcare) and distribution (Redhat) dollars.

Read the advocacy howto and some of the ESR (Eric Raymond) writings.
