SGI Continues Aggressive Drive into Linux Market

Introduces New SGI 1400L Server, SGI Linux and Enterprise-Level Linux
Support

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA (August 2, 1999) -- Continuing its aggressive drive
to bring Linux® solutions to the enterprise, SGI (NYSE: SGI) today
announced the immediate availability of its new Intel® processor-based
SGI 1400L server. Preloaded with the SGITM Linux® Environment with Red
Hat® Linux® 6.0, the SGI 1400L server offers customers a reliable and
cost-effective platform for database serving, file sharing, technical
computing and Web serving. The SGI 1400L server is one of two products
in the new SGI TM 1000 server family also announced today.

"The SGI 1400L server running SGI Linux Environment combines SGI's
expertise in high-performance, scalable servers with the reduced
cost and high reliability that is provided by an open source
operating system," said Jan Silverman, vice president of Marketing,
Computer Systems Business Unit, SGI. "With our recent offering of
XFS source code to Linux, SGI demonstrated its full support for the
open source model of software development. Today's introduction of
the SGI 1400L server addresses the needs of our customers who've
championed the use of Linux in technical computing and enterprise
  markets."

SGI 1400L ships with one to four 500 MHz Pentium® III XeonTM
processors with a selection of 512KB, 1MB or 2MB of secondary cache,
up to 4GB of memory, seven PCI slots, six Ultra2 SCSI hot swap drive
bays and redundant power supplies. SGI 1400L is available in
rack-mount or deskside configurations.

"The last thing you want in an e-commerce site is to wait. The new
SGI server line uses up to four of Intel's fastest processors,
giving you the performance headroom you need for e-commerce," said
Stephan Schambach, CEO and president, INTERSHOP Communications.

SGI 1400L is ideal for collaboration and messaging, network video
streaming, proxy serving, security serving and scientific analysis in
environments where customization and reliability afforded by the
Linux® operating system are requirements. With the introduction of its
Linux OS-based servers, SGI is also able to address more customer
needs such as engineers and designers in electronic design automation
(EDA) and software development who rely on UNIX® or UNIX operating
system-like environments, but prefer the more affordable Intel
Architecture-based hardware.

SGI is committed to furthering the Linux operating system's industrial
strength by contributing its technical leadership in scalability,
reliability and performance. Specifically, SGI is working with the
open source community to contribute its journaled file system (XFSTM),
as well as multiprocessing and interoperability technologies.

In addition, SGI today offers enterprise-level services and support
for Linux which includes: 24x7 phone support, electronic tools and
utilities for end-user use, integrated managed services and consulting
services, and customer training. SGI brings superior support
responsiveness and knowledge to the rapidly expanding Linux market
with thousands of service professionals worldwide dedicated to solving
customers' most challenging problems.
