I had a problem with another ISP. The problem seems to be similar. I am
going to outline what I did with that ISP. try the same stuff with MTNL and
let me know if it works.

The basic scenario:

(a) The authentication is done with LOGIN as well as PAP. Windows 95 handles
this scenario well. I don't really know why ISP's do this, but I think they
have a false sense of security when they do both.
(b) All you have to do is basically configure the linux system for LOGIN.
(c) In addition to that, leave the pap-secrets file with the correct
password and account.
(d) Now, linux will use LOGIN to authenticate and then once pppd starts
sending LCP requests, it will transmit the account and password. This will
authenticate using PAP.
