Minicom command and Python book.

Hi,
    Can someone tell me the command to give in minicom to raise the speaker
volume of my GVC-33.6K(Model SF1133V/R) external modem.
    I am considering doing Python, could somebody suggest me a good book for
the same that might be easily available in India. Please note that I know
only moderate amount of C and bash-shell scripting and none other scripting
languages, a book that discusses Python from this level up would be great.
