Shanu post is outdated as far as potato is concerned:

As of recent, this has been changed and things have become more
steamlined.  In /etc, U have this serial.conf file wherein U make
necessary changes. The setseial script has been taken off from the 
/etc/rc.boot dir.  It has also got some facility to save the changed 
state of the serial ports.
