Boot your machine in single user mode (by giving linux single at boot prompt
of lilo, assuming you use lilo) and edit /etc/inittab file. You will see a
line like
id::5:::
(I am not sure about the syntax of the line as I am not on Linux right now.)
Change this 5 to 3 and reboot.
