you should try treading
The Linux kernel
part of the linux documentation project. This is as good as it gets in
the free world.
then you also might want to look the reading list in the HOW-TO
section,there is a nifty set of books
especially  the books by 

Alessandro Rubini ( hope I have the spelling correct)

but first give TLK ( as its called) a try.
