During installation also linux kernel is running with all six tty and
complete file system including /var. All the installation programs run
under linux only. It is totally different from 'setup' or 'install' of
windhus.
You can switch between tty by alt f1-f6.
When I am on tight disk space I usually check with df -a to see how much
disk space is left in different partitions.
Another useful command is ps to see what installation program is
running.

Best Wishes.
