Hello All:
ILUG-Cochin held its meeting today as per schedule. The meeting began
at
11 a.m. was attended by 9 members out of which 3 were first timers.
At the outset, members expressed their profound thanks to Sudhakar
Chandrasekharan for providing the `Slink' Debian binary CD set via
Arun
Krishnaswamy and Ramakrishnan. No words are adequate to express the
encouragement from Thaths and also to Manoj Srivastava !! All list
members who are ILUG-Cochin members are requested to contact ragOO
(ragu@xxxxxxxx) for obtaining a copy of Debian GNU/Linux v2.1
The meeting went off with a formal introduction by all the members.
Among the various topics discussed were:
All the members had essentially one singular problem - Kernel
compiling.
So a talk on this topic was given by myself. Most of the members were
unable to grasp the oral description of compiling the kernel, saying
it
was too confusing. It was then suggested by one of the members to
demonstrate the procedure on a PC. It was agreed upon and the next
meeting will be held at a location where a PC/s is accessible. Towards
this end, J. Jacob has even agreed to provide his bank of computers
and
the office space. We are yet to find a sponsor for Tea and Snacks ??
Another issue raised was the question as to which distribution
was better - Debian or Red Hat. This degenerated to a heated debate
but
fortunately no one was expelled for speaking their mind ;-). It was
then decided to have a demo installation of Debian for the next
meeting
so as to give an idea of the power of this distro and a feature by
feature comparison with Red Hat.
Slowly there was a shift from Linux to WindoZe related topics.
This was immediately moderated and made clear that this was not the
forum for WindoZe redressal.
By far, this was a very successful meeting with maximum
attendance and maximum duration.
