Interesting LNO Discussion Thread:

ph34r posted:

"Installing Linux on a "Minimal Machine"

Lately I have noticed a lot of BB posts about putting linux on minimal
machines, either to use as a firewall/router or to just play with linux a
little. This is actually a great use of old hardware and Linux, since you can
build high-cost equipment out of low-cost hardware and OS/software. Seen the
prices on a 486 with 4mb to 8mb of ram lately? How about a small-office type
router?

But, installing Linux on such a machine is not for the average user. If you
like to have your hand held all the way with nice GUI interfaces, forget it.
This will explain how I managed to install Slackware 7.1 on a old Toshiba
Satellite T1910 laptop - black and white screen, 486sx33 CPU, just under 4mb
of ram, 300mb drive (e-bay for $10), single 3.5in floppy, single pcmcia slot,
and a Gateway 10mb ethernet card. I've got a 28.8 and a 2400 modem for it,
but I haven't bothered with either of those yet.

But what is a machine like this good for? Well, if I got the modem going, I
could use it as a 'net connect machine for my small home lan - I always
connect at sub-28.8 anyway. What I really use it for though is as a
terminal/console to my real Linux machine from the couch. While I can't play
Quake3, I can use BitchX, links, lynx, ftp, ssh, etc. to do web stuff - if it
is command-line, it is fair game, if I am patient. In fact, I wrote this on
it."

Transmeta chips to hit corporate laptops
---
Ripped from Cnet, "NEC will announce on Monday two new Versa notebook PCs
based on Transmeta's Crusoe TM 5600 processors, according to sources close to
the company.

Though Sony has been shipping Transmeta-based Vaio notebooks in North America
since last year, NEC's new notebooks represent the chipmaker's first
corporate win in the region. Transmeta also recently won a large corporate
contract with Fujitsu. But the 12,000 notebooks resulting from the deal will
ship only in Japan.

By choosing Transmeta, NEC has bucked tradition. PC makers have been
reluctant to offer non-Intel chips to corporate customers in the United
States, especially in the notebook market."

--Transmeta sure seems to be landing alot of deals? hmmm

Loki, Availability of Tribes2 and Alpha Centauri
---
As many know, I rarely post Press Releases, but I still receive them.
Sometimes they have juicy nuggets of information, other times they are just a
waste of time. This is a juicy nugget time. However, I link the PR at our
sister site Linuxpr.

"Not one, but TWO Linux games will ship next week from Loki Software, Inc.

Tribes 2 will be HOT on the heels of the Windows release by Sierra On-Line,
and the long-awaited Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri Planetary Pack by Firaxis
will also make its Linux debut.

Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri Planetary Pack will ship to resellers on Monday,
April 16, with the low MSRP of $29.95. Tribes 2 will follow suit on
Wednesday, April 18, with an MSRP of $49.95."

CERT® Advisory Multiple Vulnerabilities in Alcatel ADSL Modems
---
Thanks to ph34r for this momma:

"Systems AffectedAlcatel Speed Touch Home ADSL ModemAlcatel 1000 ADSL Network
Termination DeviceOverview

The San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) has recently discovered several
vulnerabilities in the Alcatel Speed Touch Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line
(ADSL) modem. These vulnerabilities are the result of weak authentication and
access control policies and exploiting them will lead to one or more of the
following: unauthorized access, unauthorized monitoring, information leakage,
denial of service, and permanent disability of affected devices.

The SDSC has published additional information regarding these vulnerabilities
at http://security.sdsc.edu/self-help/alcatel/

I. Description

VU#211736 - Alcatel ADSL modems grant unauthenticated TFTP access via Bounce
Attacks

Alcatel ADSL modems allow unauthenticated Trivial File Transfer Protocol
(TFTP) access from the local area network (LAN) as a method to update
firmware and to make configuration changes to the device. In conjunction with
one of several common vulnerabilities, a remote attacker may be able to gain
unauthenticated access as well.

For example, if a system on the LAN side of the ADSL modem has the UDP echo
service enabled, a remote attacker may be able to spoof packets such that the
ADSL modem will believe that this traffic originated from the local network.
By sending a packet to the UDP echo service with a spoofed source port of 69
(TFTP) and a source address of 255.255.255.255, the system providing the echo
service can be tricked into sending a TFTP packet to the ADSL modem. If a
system offering this service is accessible from the Internet it may be
possible to use the system to attack the ADSL modem.

Any mechanism for "bouncing" UDP packets off systems on the LAN side of the
network may potentially allow a remote attacker to gain TFTP access to the
device. Gaining TFTP access to the device allows the remote attacker to
essentially gain complete control of the device."

NSA finds a friend for it's SELinux project

Thanks to Apostata for the linka-dinka-ding-dong:

"The National Security Agency, the electronic snooping arm of the U.S.
government, has enlisted computer security company Network Associates to help
create a version of Linux that's less vulnerable to attack.

The NSA awarded the two-year, $1.2 million contract to the PGP Security
division of the Santa Clara, Calif.-based company, Network Associates
announced Monday. The company will add more security features into a version
of Linux the NSA already has paid for called "Security-Enhanced Linux"
(SELinux)."

Linux is the fastest-growing operating system on the market,
with a powerful presence in corporate computing -
primarily behind servers - and strong potential in the embedded space.
Unsurprisingly, it faces difficult-to-overcome barriers when it comes
to desktop usage, according to the new report,
"Linux: You Get What You Pay For?" from internet.com Corp.
