I think this was the very link Ilug-Hyd saw (and discussed) a while back (~ a
year ago I think).
The plan we chalked out was
1. Find schools / colleges with old 8088 / XT machines, plus an old 486 or
so (plenty of those).
2. Configure the 8088s and such as diskless dumb terminals (direct cable
connections were more than OK). The 486 (or whatever) would be the server.
3. Set up logins for all the students (or one login per batch if the kids are
freshers etc)
This was usually far better (and easier) for all concerned, compared to
whatever ancient unix they were running on a limited set of terminals (mostly
SCO, for some weird reason - perhaps because their LAN was usually networked
using Netware 3.x)
4. Set up mail on it (either as a UUCP node from nicnet, or a single ISP
account, where lots of popmail boxes would be configured for the students
from various freemail services... dialout, fetchmail, sendmail -q as a
cronjob) <= added extra, sort of.
