Connecting to the net
Hi all
I am new to linux but quite excited about it. I have configured most of it
except that I just cannot connect to the net using Linux. I have an account
with Satyam and they were not very helpful either. This is what I had done :
the /etc/resolv.conf file contains
domain satyam.net.in
nameserver 210.214.92.16
nameserver 210.214.92.15
the /etc/hosts.conf file contains
order hosts,bind
multi on
I used minicom at first and while it would connect to the satyam network ( I
would get the prompt asking for login and password) it would disconnect
after a minute. Unlike VSNL there is no prompt to start PPP on the host
machine. I have tried pressing enter, but after the garbage the modem hangs
up. Going to normal screen mode and using ping also showed no connection
I then used kppp (from KDE) . I could then make the connection, i.e. the log
shows packets received and sent. The connection however does not connect to
any site. All the addresses that I give on the Netscape give the message
that " the server could not be found" . the packets received and sent are
also at a very slow speed. After 15 min only 2500 bytes were sent or
received. Pinging on the DNS number of the host gave a response as did the
"route" command. However when I tried to ping the host name "satyam.net.in"
it gave the message -- unknown host.
What could be wrong?
Please let me know.
Thanks in advance
Ratnadeep JOshi
