okie,
i was having probs with playing movies earlier too.
but after i dloaded mplayer, i've become a move buff.
check out - http://mplayer.sourceforge.net

It is recommended and tested by me. Although its command line based its powerful man!!
also be sure to download libsdl from www.libsdl.org
i am not sure whether it is needed by mplayer, but an awful lot of games do use it.
