Switching from Winduhs/Outlook Express to Linux

Hi everyone

I was stuck with winduhs/OE for e-mail as all my mail archives were there. So I finally decided that I had had enough of the OE crap and must find a way. Here is a guide for anyone who wants to do the same:

(1) In OE, compact all folders (file menu). This will remove all junk from the mailbox files.

(2) Find the location of your OE message files. This is usually somewhere underthe windows dirctory. Just search for inbox.dbx and note down the folder name. (If you find more than one such file, choose the folder for the most recent one)

(3) Boot into linux and download oe2mbx from http://software.starnate.com/

(4) Mount the winduhs partition and copy all .dbx files, from the folder name you found in step 2, to a new folder in you home directory.

(5) Install oe2mbx (instructions in the tarball).

(6) $ oe2mbx *.dbx

(7) Now you will have files ending with .mbx corresponding to each .dbx file. These .mbx files are in the standard mbox format. So copy them to whereever it is you store your mailbox files and viola! its done. :-)

(8) Delete the winduhs partition and add all the freed-up space to your tree. ;-)
