bash problem

hi
i have an alias l='ls -l' in my .bash_profile

also i have a directory named l
now if i do ls l , bash says 
ls: ls No such file or directory

but rmdir l
    mkdir l , etc run fine


also could someone tell me how to make hard link to a
dir. i tried as root with almost all permutations of
ln command , but couldn't
