teach perl as the first language to a kid, and for the rest of his life he
won't be able to program properly ever again!! ;)

Basically the best language to teach programming today imho is java.. It is
clean, easy to understand and code in. Once a person knows java, he will
surely hav a solid foundation to start from. And above all java is free
(sort of.....)

PS: Personally i hav used perl a lot and i like it a lot for the kind of
work where it is well suited! But one tool doesn't fit all! And i found that
java was the easiest language to pick up (although i knew c/cpp/perl/pascal
etc before that!)
